Cheers for taking up the task Simon!
Posted by La Idler at January 8, 2005 11:43 PM
It was always a bit of a stretch to put Sri Lanka and Bangladesh in the same category, but it's a bit odd not to Sri Lanka in the group title now that the results are in.
Thanks for your efforts,
Fred

Asia Blog Awards - Voting has Closed
Simon. Thanks for running the contest. I discovered quite a new reads through it. Actually, I would appreciate it if you could keep a list of the nominees open for a bit longer so I can blogroll before it vanishes. The hate mail Mia and Spirit Fingers received is unforgivable. On a more positive note, in S'pore we were actually inspired enough organize brunch.

Simon,
Thanks for keeping it going and doing such a good job. I suppose I must get round to voting!

I tried to vote, but I got this:
We are experiencing some technical difficulties. We will be back shortly.
Thank you

Cheers!

Seems to be working for me, Ron. Try again and let me know if it works.
Posted by Simon at December 15, 2004 10:01 AM
How come Hemlock didn't even get nominated for funniest blog? I was just looking for him in that section so I could cast my vote. Maybe I should have paid more attention to the process and nominated him myself, rather than asume that about a thousand other people would have done it for me!
Posted by fumier at December 15, 2004 11:32 AM
It is working for me now Simon and I already voted.
Cheers!
Posted by Ron at December 15, 2004 01:47 PM
Good luck with this Awards!
I reckon it's tough job as it is, and to run 'em during the busy month of December takes dedication.

For Best Designed blog my web site name is spelled wrong (you added an extra e and an extra r) and the link is incorrect on the vote page. (it should be http://depository.unfoldedorigami.com). I also noticed that cranialcavity's link is incorrect also (you've got quotation marks in the href). Shouldn't the links to the pages at least be correct?

i vote - Pok Ku
Posted by napaloh at December 16, 2004 11:12 AM
You may want to check your voting (Bravenet) page. It still contains the following at the top:
"You can vote once in only a single category each day."
Thanks for all your efforts with this years awards.

Simon, just wondering why gongkapas.blogspot.com was not a finalist in Best Malaysian Blog though it was nominated?
Posted by Ewok at December 17, 2004 07:27 PM
Simon,
Last week (before the nominations closed), I tried to nominate Fazu of http://fazu.typepad.com for Best Malaysian Blog, my commnet didn't *register* why was that? And nwo it is too late!!! UGH
Posted by Lisa at December 17, 2004 09:31 PM
Hey Simon, it's cool that I was nominated, but how did that happen? And at the last minute? And here I've been telling everyone to vote for Pok Ku..hehe.

Mr. Simon. With the credentials of a READER[ you know how important is that!] I strongly recommend that you reconsider Gongkapas Times for you finalist list.[I seek to say so because you say that you believe in 'second & third & fourth...chances]
Well Gongkapas truly deseves a double take in the Best diary/ journal category.

I just found out that my blog "...not a weBlog" (http://vbglau.blogspot.com) got nominated under best malaysian blog. Would just like to bring to your attention the mistake on the link to my page : there is a double "http http" resulting in a dead link. Hope you will ammend it. Thanks

[frustrated]Simon, next time you hold the awards it might be a good idea to delegate to somebody if you go away for most of the voting duration. Because I'm at my wit's end here that's all. And it's not a good place to be on Xmas eve.[/frustrated]

Asia Blog Awards 2004: Introduction and Rules
I think everyone should be entitled to *one* vote. Perhaps you could find software that requires the registration of voters - making multiple votes by a single person really too much of an inconvience. Registration also solves vote rigging (pretty easy with most online voting scripts - vote, reconnect your connection to get a new IP address, delete all cookies, vote, repeat)
Posted by Rajan R at December 1, 2004 06:45 PM
That's a fair point and one I considered, but due to the time constraints and the lack of available software I just went with what I had at hand. If you can find some free/cheap voting software that will do this then I'm happy to try it. But it needs to be ready to go by next Wednesday...
From last year, Phil had a reasonably good one-time only voting system and still plenty of people tried to cheat. I figure this is the best compromise. I will be tracking the voting to make sure people don't vote more than once a day.
Posted by Simon at December 1, 2004 06:58 PM
And what if our vote is for Simon's World?
Is Simon's World eligible?
And if it's not, do I get accolades for trying?
Posted by Helen at December 1, 2004 07:37 PM
H - I appreciate it but I'm ruling myself out. However if I happen to get nominated in the World Awards, you can vote for me there instead!
And of course you get accolades for trying. You get accolades for just being you!
Posted by Simon at December 1, 2004 07:42 PM
Best of luck with it, although I think you should of listed the blogs first and then invite submissions.
Posted by Giles at December 2, 2004 07:09 AM
Rajan - many thanks for the tip. You guys forget that some of us are pretty computer illiterate and i would never have worked out how to vote more than once without being detected but now i know how to vote early and vote often as the old saying goes.
hopefully this means i will be able to raise even more cash from the auction of my vote(s).
Posted by the other giles at December 2, 2004 02:26 PM
Any chance of a summary page of the nominations?
Posted by shaky at December 2, 2004 03:18 PM
Where do all of us Central Asia blogs go? :)
I'm actually surprised at the number I'm finding that are written by Peace Corps Volunteers in Kazakhstan and Kyrgyzstan (Uzbekistan has few active ones).
Really though, we're a weird category -- not quite Asia, but not quite Europe, just hanging out on the fringes.
Posted by Nathan Hamm at December 2, 2004 10:55 PM
Helen beat me to the question!
Can I write you in? How about if there is a groundswell of public support for a write in campaign?

who's going to feed the grandchildren while you feeds all these bloody bloggers inflated egos. Just fix the results at the beginning and all the votes can go into the ether. This technique almost worked in The Ukraine and has been successful elsewhere
Posted by da at December 3, 2004 01:17 PM
Did you realize yet that you are nominated for a world weblog award? Congrads -- see http://2004weblogawards.com/archives/poll.php
Posted by Andy at December 3, 2004 11:27 PM
The Central Asia link takes us to the Vietnam category. I am, of course, willing to help you out with selecting the finalists. And, since the Central Asian blogosphere is a lightly-trafficked place, I heartily encourage everyone to check out the Central Asia blogs on my blogroll to help with the nominating!
Posted by Nathan Hamm at December 4, 2004 02:07 AM
Should all be fixed now Nathan.

This bizarre blog by a former porno director is hilarious one day, offensive the next, and then he goes and surprises you with moving and poignant the day after that. Basically, it's a really angry guy who guys around Tokyo talking to homeless people, giving people the finger to strangers and photographing their reaction, or exploring the city's alternative culture of raves and costume play.

Doing this for under a year counts as a newcomer, right? I'll nominate myself in that case. You already know about my site, Simon, but for those who don't: I translate articles from Japanese news sites that otherwise wouldn't make it into the English language. You can compare me to semen all you want, but without me who would have known about Hideki Matsui's steamy romance with Sakai Miki??

This bizarre blog by a former porno director is hilarious one day, offensive the next, and then he goes and surprises you with moving and poignant the day after that. Basically, it's a really angry guy who guys around Tokyo talking to homeless people, giving people the finger to strangers and photographing their reaction, or exploring the city's alternative culture of raves and costume play.

Err, guys. While I am all for Pok Ku, you do realise that this is nomination and if a guy is nominated, you wait for the voting stage. I ask you not to take Pok Ku's name in vain by spamming this comment space.
Now let's wait for vote day and get Pok Ku on the map as a very Malaysian blog.
And stop spamming. It does not make us look good.

Attention Pok Ku followers: we only needed to nominate him once! (which means it was totally unnecessary for me to second his nomination!)
The real voting doesn't start till the 15th. Vote for him then!

One of the best of the new wave of Koreablogs is the Lost Nomad, so I nominate him. A variety of topics, some personal stuff... and he doesn't leave behind an awful trail of typos.

Joe,
Thanks for nominating ...of glowsticks & dice. I used to run that whilst I was in China, but it's happening over at http://premiumblend.blogspot.com now. Technically, I can't be nominated in this category because I'm not living in China anymore.
I do still visit and write about it, though, so I wouldn't object to being nominated.
I guess I'll nominate danwei (http://www.danwei.org), myself.

please also remove shandyman from the voting (i think only my mum would vote for me anyhow to be honest, and even that would require a bribe). My sporadic rants about women and flagrant plagarisms are just not worthy.

Well, in fact I nominate all the other Hong Kong blogs not nominated above. That is, if I can do that.
However, please do not nominate See Lai (and Nude King) for this year's award. Mainly because after about one month, See Lai will no longer be a blog but a web site (and I may not be the owner anymore).
Many thanks in advance and I wish all the best to all the participants.
