Western cultural imperialism has a lot to answer for

Often moral lines are crossed in the endless pursiut of "beauty", especially these days in China:

Parents are taking children as young as three to plastic surgeons in China as part of a trend that is seeing the country's young generation increasingly putting themselves under the knife...Most want their noses enlarged and a fold cut onto their eyelids to make them bigger -- to make them look more like the Westerners they see in Hollywood films and the ubiquitous advertisements on billboards and magazines in China.

China has become the world's eighth-largest and Asia's second-biggest cosmetics market as disposable incomes jump in an increasingly wealthy society.

The original article in the People's Daily is here. It has more, including the interesting news that following conventions of the beauty industry, plastic surgeons refuse people below 18 without obvious physical defects. I doubt it.

China has to set a glowing example, given that it is hosting the world's first pageant for beauties created by plastic surgery (can't remember if the story has already been linked to on this site)

This is nothing new, I remember seeing beautiful girls in Japan convinced that they were ugly having their eyes surgically enlarged so that they looked like US movie stars.

In other ocuntries this is called self mutilation.

Down with cultural contamination.

I'm half Japanese but got stuck with the white people looks. My sister, on the other hand, has the beautiful dark skin, black hair, and exotic eyes. My entire life, I have been so envious of how beautiful she looks, and how beautiful the Japanese side of my family can look, and have always wanted to be the one with the Asian looks. She, on the other hand, has spent her life wanting to be white.

The grass may be greener on the other side, but what an absolute shame that we have to take lawnmowers to our faces just to get there.

Helen, you're just fine as you are.

Hey, just who is this "Simon World", anyway? I keep seeing referrals to my blog, ShenzhenRen, from here. Thanks for the link, at any rate; I'll return the favor.

Re: "Cultural Imperialism"-- I'm finding that phrase a bit tired and overworked. Chinese entrepreneurs are begging for McDonald's franchises and Buick dealerships, and NOBODY from the "west" is over in China encouraging three-year-olds to have cosmetic surgery. Another phrase, unfortunately, is more appropriate: "cultural envy", but it doesn't sell as easily.

Regardless, "Welcome to Shenzhen, anytime."

One of my best friends who is a frequent commenter on my site had his folds removed when he was about 12. Didn't seem to harm him any. He's from a mixed race family and his siblings had no folds - he wanted to look like the rest of them.
