Fa Lun Gong Spearheading Chinese Revolution?

William Pfaff writes in today's International Herald Tribune that China's growth is less threatening than it seems because huge stumbling blocks loom on the horizon for the CCP as they try to keep their monopoly of political legitimacy as the economy booms. He strangely chooses to focus on the Falungong movement as the chief moral counterpoint to the CCP and its chief domestic threat. I don't think I'd agree with that, but it's worth a read. His view certainly contains part of the arguments Indians make about China in the previous post!

I would have thought that the environmental/land requisition uprisings in rural areas pose more of a threat, but they're kept pretty quiet.

Yes, I think that the uprisings against rural corruption are a much more direct threat to central authority than some philosophical considerations that are really not in tune with the real, immediate concerns of the Chinese countryside. I have agreed with other things Pfaff has written before, but not this.

The question I've been asking about Falun Gong is: are they a religious movement that is anti-government because of oppression, or are they an anti-government organization that uses religion as a cover? I don't know their origins, but given their sophisticated ability to take over multiple cable channels within China, I've started leaning towards the latter.

This reporter obviously read all the brochures at the taxi queue at Hung Hom Station.
