Believing what you read
The SCMP reports China is banning chequebook 'news' - they will no longer print paid reports or advertorials. Three leading mainland newspapers - including the People's Daily - have announced a blanket ban on printing paid reports lavishing praise on local authorities and officials. The move is part of the central government's efforts to root out corruption and restore the official media's credibility...Further proof of both the quality of China's newspapers and the cadres in Government. Rising through the ranks is a matter of bank balance and connections. Competence is not a factor. Time-honoured newspaper traditions are falling foul to China's drive to stop corruption completely undermining the public's faith in the Government. But where we will now find out about all the glorious prestige projects of the provinces and cities? Think of the children. posted by Simon on 05.12.04 at 11:25 AM in the

Wow...and I thought the Bush campaign ads paid for by private conservative Christian groups in the States were bad. Well, they are bad. Nauseating, actually. At least the smokescreen seems a little more obvious in China. In the US, the majority of people think the word "propaganda" only applies to socialist, fascist, or distopian states. It's a testament to just how effective the US propaganda machine is. The quality of news media and government officials everywhere tend to be pretty lousy these days. I find great comfort in the fact that blogs exist. Speaking of China and blogs existing, what host should I use while I'm in China to make sure I'm not blocked? Not blogger. Not typepad... posted by: lujingxi on 05.12.04 at 12:46 PM [permalink]I suggest you ask people via the Living in China blog (link on my sidebar) as I'm in hong Kong, where the situation differs....for now. posted by: Simon on 05.12.04 at 04:41 PM [permalink] |
