Why do doctors never have a computer in their rooms? Their secretary seems to, so it can't be that. And quite frankly, I'd rather know that my doctor has access to all the wonders of the internet, the most up-to-date information. Instead it tends to be old magazines, journals from 1978 and random files. Really it is a worry. After all, if doctors don't need computers, who does?

They do now. I work at a software company that does EMR - electronic medical records- we have every doctor put a computer in his room because the charts, the xrays, everything is on the computer. Paperless doctors offices.

My local GP has certainly had a PC on his desk for some time, and it appears to have patients records on it.

Yeah, sounds good, and we're all for it, till we start hearing the horror stories of people that were at the Doc's, and he started to look something up on their condition, only to get distracted by extraneous search engine returns for really cool online games...

I just always assumed they had internet access plugged into their brains. J/K.
The last few visits to the doc and I noticd that in his building there are a total of 7 computers, one in each room. He's a bit neurotic, but at least he understands the value of being connected.

WR: even worse, he could be looking at blogs. Crikey, if I saw that I'd be out of there in a second.

Pylorns/Chris: that's good to here but in my experience it hasn't been the case. Maybe I need to get a new doctor.

I think only 6% of doctors have moved to an EMR.
