Asian values

A couple are arrested for a trivial and subjective offence. Then they're asked for a bribe. They refuse and face court. The press get hold of the story, the officers are charged with corruption. Yet the couple still face the charges. Their crime? Kissing in public. This is a love story, Malaysian style.

If they get in so much trouble for just that, then it would seem certain that I am bound for the chair :)

actually that piece of news is nothing new. when the self-styled religious police embarked on their "patrol" back in the mid 90's - or earlier - in the state of Johore itself, it was couples who were "merely holding hands" that were rounded up.

at first their victims were malay muslims but their zeal didn't stop there; such that when matters turned ugly with claims of racial discrimination, the state minister - "mentri besar" - or/and the state king intervened and warned the "police" to keep off or risk an inter-racial showdown.

btw Helen, "it would seem certain that I am bound for the chair"

believe me it's just the press that made it out to be that scary.
